Head on over to Ward Village for an evening of music, art and information at New Wave Friday.
The variety and diversity of Hawaii’s musicians will be represented by a full slate of Na Hoku Hano Hano Award-winning musicians: soul singer Paula Fuga, performing with slack-key guitarist singer/songwriter Kawika Kahiapo; longtime premier reggae band Mana‘o Company; and island contemporary standard-bearer Kapena.
Environmentalism is a theme, with a sustainability zone and short-film series on ocean conservation, and a recycling event by Zero Waste Oahu. There will be demonstrations on traditional Polynesian navigation and rope making by the Polynesian Voyaging Society, and ocean-themed keiki activities. The event also features retailers who incorporate sustainable practices.
Comic book artist Cheyne Gallarde will decorate a 2020 Toyota Corolla on the street in front of South Shore Market, which will be closed to traffic.

Music by the water in the evening is always a pleasant experience, so it’s good that Sea Life Park Hawaii’s Twilight Concert Series is back for its fourth season this weekend.
This Saturday’s concert features longtime Hawaiian pop duo Ben & Maila, island contemporary stalwarts Kapena, the acclaimed trio Makaha Sons featuring founding member Jerome Koko with new members Mark Yim and Kimo Artis, and Anuhea, the Maui-born indie pop singer/songwriter who has become one of the islands top musical ambassadors.
Tickets come in variety of packages. An adult VIP ticket for $59.50 includes admission to the park from noon onward, early access to seating and a meet and greet with the artists. It’s a good chance to check out features like the park’s penguin habitat, aviary, shark cave and turtle hatchery, then end the day with music. (Regular park admission is $22.50-$39.50.)
Concert-only tickets are $49.50. Park passholders pay $19.50.
The series continues on Aug. 17 with John Cruz, Natalie Ai Kamauu, Raiatea Helm, Kimie Miner and two-time Grammy winner Kalani Pe‘a.

Rather than a drive-in movie, how about a surf-in movie? The popular Sunset on the Beach event returns to Waikiki on Saturday with “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.”
The animated film is a departure from and a comment on previous “Spider-Man” films, refreshing the concept for a new generation of young film fans. This one is filled with Spidey-type characters, voiced by a variety of actors from Hailee Steinfeld to Nicholas Cage, with other contributions from top drawer actors like Liev Schreiber as the arch-villain Kingpin and Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali as the kindly uncle of Miles (Shameik Moore), who becomes the latest Spider-Man.
“… It’s terrific — sweet, serious and irreverent,” wrote Los Angeles Times critic Justin Chang in a review of the film.
Festivities begin at 4:30 p.m. with keiki activities, food stalls and vendors. The film begins after sundown.
Other films in the family-friendly series, presented by Southwest Airlines, are “Mary Poppins Returns” on July 6; “Coco” on Aug. 10; and “Up” on Sept. 14.

Time to celebrate Sailor Jerry, the pioneering tattoo artist Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins.
Collins was one of the more colorful characters in pre-statehood Hawaii, skippering a touring schooner, fronting a dance band and hosting a radio show. But it was as a tattoo artist where he left his biggest mark, creating vibrant pigments and developing techniques that were less traumatic to the skin. He was an irreverant, often-raunchy artist who spoke his mind, making him a role model for present-day punk-rockers.
Music promoter Jason Miller launched The Sailor Jerry Festival in 2015; it has grown to encompass 18 venues in Chinatown, with music, art exhibits, burlesque and comedy acts.
Collins’ “Old Ironside Tattoo” studio on Smith Street, along with Black Cat Tattoo on Nuuanu Avenue and Naughty Vegan Tattoo on Maunakea will offer special prices on tattoos, starting at midday, while music and other entertainment get started in the late afternoon.
Headlining the musical bill are California punk rock bands The Grim and Youth Brigade, beginning at 11 p.m. at NextDoor.
Among the nearly 40 Hawaii acts participating will be The Maneki Nekos at 9:15 at Sin Lounge, Shawn Garnett (Flippa on “Hawaii 5-0”), pictured, at 10 p.m. at Pantheon and Maui band Breakaway Demon Sex at 10:15 p.m. at Downbeat Lounge.
