Pearl City High’s Sunshine Fontes was named the Gatorade Hawaii girls soccer player of the year on Thursday.
Fontes, a forward, midfielder and defender, scored 24 goals this season as a senior for the Chargers before suffering a knee injury in the OIA Division I tournament semifinals. She also won the Gatorade award as a freshman.
Fontes’ 22 international goals are the most for the U.S. under-17 national team.
She will play for UCLA next season.
6 from Hawaii make VNL travel roster
Two former Hawaii All-Americans — middle Taylor Averill and libero Tui Tuileta — have made the U.S. men’s national volleyball team’s 14-player travel roster for the third week of Volleyball Nations League action today through Sunday.
It means that all six players with island ties are activated for the first time in this year’s VNL play. The other four played during the first two weeks for the U.S.: setters Kawika Shoji (‘Iolani) and Micah Christenson (Kamehameha); Micah Ma’a (Punahou), a designated setter who has also been used as a hitter; and libero Erik Shoji (Punahou).
The U.S. will play Argentina (2-4), Germany (2-4) and France (5-1). Each match is scheduled for 5 a.m., and all will be shown live on FloVolleyball.tv, a subscription service.
Averill is replacing Jeff Jendryk and Tuileta is traveling instead of Kyle Dagostino.
