Maui’s Alex Chiarella won the Lethbridge Paradise Canyon Open for his first Mackenzie Tour victory on Sunday in Lethridge, Alberta.
The Seabury Hall graduate from Makawao finished at 20-under-par 264, closing with a 3-under 68 for a one-stroke victory over Travis Trace. A birdie on the par-3 17th hole provided Chiarella with the winning margin.
Chiarella, the runner-up in the 2012 state high school championship, held the 54-hole lead at 17 under and held off the field to earn the win in his fourth start on the Canadian tour this season and the eighth of his career.
The three-time Maui Open champion tied for third at the Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada Q-School USA West in March, giving him fully exempt status for the first half of the season. He missed the cut in his previous three events before pulling out the win on Sunday.
‘Iolani graduate Lorens Chan tied for seventh at 16 under in his fourth consecutive top-10 finish. Chan was in contention until a run of three bogeys late in Sunday’s round and signed for a 3-under 68.
Moanalua graduate Brent Grant also shot a 68 in the final round and tied for 22nd at 12 under.
