On Tuesday, American players Sam Querrey and Danielle Collins committed to play in the 2019 Hawaii Open Tennis Tournament.
The event, held December 26-28 in Honolulu, also features U.S. Open semifinalist and ATP World Tour No. 7-ranked Kei Nishikori and 3-time Grand Slam winner and WTA No. 13 Angelique Kerber.
Querrey, who has 10 singles titles, made his first semifinal appearance in a Grand Slam in 2017 at Wimbledon.
Collins made the semifinals of the Australian Open in 2019.
Koga into U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship
Jennifer Koga of Honolulu qualified for the 71st U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship on Tuesday in Stevens Points, Wis.
Over the two days of stroke play at SentryWorld Golf Course, she shot a 1-over 145 (74-71), well ahead of the cut to qualify for match play.
The round of 64 is scheduled to begin today at 3 a.m., with Koga teeing off at 3:54 a.m. against Yoona Kim of Fair Lawn, N.J. Kim shot a 3-over 147 during stroke play.
Kamie Hamada (151) of Aiea and Kiara Todd (168) of Kaneohe failed to qualify for the match play event.
Kai, Furtado win pro soccer title
Former Hawaii soccer standouts Natasha Kai and Sonest Furtado were a part of the LA Galaxy OC team that won the United Women’s Soccer championship Tuesday with a 1-0 defeat of host Calgary Foothills WFC in Canada.
“Winning the UWS national title was such an awarding feeling and doing it with one of my biggest role models (Tasha) was like a dream come true,” Furtado messaged the Star-Advertiser.
The UWS is a second-tier women’s pro league in its fourth season.
LA Galaxy OC went 7-1-2 this season and avenged a loss and a draw to Calgary during the regular season.
