More than $45,000 was awarded to members and alumnae by the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association, which announced its annual scholarships and grants recently.
The HSJGA Athlete Assistance program awarded 22 golfers a total of $12,000 to help subsidize travel costs. All members could apply and applications were based on schedule, financial need and past representation.
The HSJGA will also help with travel costs for the 16 members just named to it its national teams for events this summer, and provide travel stipends to members who qualified for USGA national championships.
The organization also awards college scholarships each spring through the Thos Rohr, Pard and Betsy Erdman and HSJGA College Scholarship Funds. This year, a total of $20,000 went to:
>> Trevor Hirata (Hawaii), Alexa Jackson (Grand Canyon), Riley Kaneshiro (Cal State Northridge), Rilen Loo (Seattle University), Samantha Nichols (Know College) and Matthew Rosato (Pepperdine).
The national teams teed off this week. Isaiah Kanno, Noah Koshi, Blaze Akana and Joshua Hayashida are at the Junior America’s Cup in Edmonton, Canada. The international field has teams from 12 western states, two Canadian provinces and Mexico.
Karissa Kilby, Lacey Uchida, Yoonjeong Huh and Lana Calibuso-Kwee make up Hawaii’s team for next week’s Girls Junior America’s Cup, in Murietta, Calif.
Hawaii’s team for the Mary Cave Cup, Aug. 6-8 in El Cajon, Calif., is made up of Shayna Lu, Jennifer Koga, Kyung Eun Lee and Myah McDonald. The Eddie Hogan Cup is the following week in Portland. Kolbe Irei, Jacob Torres, Peter Jung and Davis Lee will represent Hawaii.
U.S. deaf title to Isobe
Hawaii’s Gerald Isobe won the Super Senior Flight (65-older) by 22 strokes at the 10th biennial U.S. Deaf Golf Championships earlier this month in Middlefield, Conn.
Isobe shot rounds of 84-80-83-77 for a 324 total. That was also good for second in the Senior Flight (50-older) and qualified him for the USA Senior Men’s team that will play in the 13th World Deaf Golf Championships, next year in Birmingham, England. Isobe will be making his ninth appearance.
Kauai’s Pono Tokioka (80-89-82-74—325) was sixth in the Open flight and earned the final qualifying spot for the USA Men’s team that will play in England. He will be making his fourth appearance.
Isobe was inducted into the U.S. Deaf Golf Association Hall of Fame in 2015.
Free golf/yoga class at Ko’olau
Kevin Ralbovsky is offering a free GolfYoga Class Aug. 3 at his KMR School at Ko’olau Golf Club.
The class runs from 4-6 p.m. and is provided by the charitable arm of the KMR School of Golf. Registration is limited to the first 15 to sign up.
Ralbovsky is also holding a fundraising golf tournament and adult pizza party Aug. 10.
