Isaac Imamura and Nakea Kahalehau recorded two hits apiece and Logan Kuloloia pitched a complete game as Central East Maui Little League (Wailuku) defeated the Southern California representative (Sweetwater Valley Little League of Bonita, Calif.) 4-2 to open Little League West Regional play on Sunday in San Bernardino, Calif.
Central East Maui scored single runs in innings two through five. Needing just 70 pitches, Kuloloia scattered five hits and struck out one for the win.
With the victory, Central East Maui advances to take on Arizona (Sunnyside Little League of Tucson, Ariz.) today at 1 p.m. The game can be seen on ESPN+.
Hawaii surfers eliminated in quarters
Barron Mamiya and Malia Manuel were eliminated in their quarterfinal matchups of the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing presented by Swatch on Sunday in Huntington Beach, Calif.
On the men’s side, Mamiya lost to Australia’s Liam O’Brien by a two-wave total of 14.67 to 13.27. O’Brien would eventually finish second.
For the women, Manuel fell to eventual winner Sage Erickson (USA) 11.36 to 8.83.
Lojeski ends run in TBT
Former UH men’s basketball player Matt Lojeski scored 11 points on 3-for-7 shooting, but it wasn’t enough as his Team Hines squad lost 68-62 to the Golden Eagles in the semifinal round of The Basketball Tournament on Sunday in Chicago.
The 2006 All-WAC newcomer and 2007 All-WAC second-team selection played nearly 22 minutes and also pulled down two rebounds in the loss.
