State high school champion Jake Sequin won the 61st Army Invitational by four shots Saturday at Leilehua.
After an opening-round 71, Sequin fired 68 in Friday’s second round to start the final round a shot behind Remington Hirano, who had a tournament-low 67 Friday.
Sequin, a junior at Mid-Pacific, closed with a 70 to finish at 7-under-par 209, four shots ahead of Hirano, who is about to start his sophomore year at the University of San Diego. Sequin had just one bogey the final 27 holes.
Zackary Kaneshiro, now a junior at Santa Clara, shot a final-round 67 to finish five back with Brett Salas (69).
Isaac Jaffurs captured the Mid-Am (25-older) title at 69—213. Marc Arakaki (71—220) took A Flight, John Mun (77—235) B Flight and Patrick Higa (80—257) C Flight.
Shimomura claims Maui Open title
Pro Chris Shimomura opened with a 67 and held on to win the Maui Open by two shots Sunday at Dunes at Maui Lani. Shimomura earned $5,000.
He finished at even-par 144, two shots ahead of Jake Grodzinsky (71) and three up on Hagen Fell (75). Bryce Iwasaki (74—149) was low amateur and tied for fourth with Justin Newsome (78).
Pro John Bascuk (73—151) took senior flight, with Nelson Domingo (78—157) low amateur. Pro Mark Shimamura (80) and amateur Doug Stacy (77) shared first in super seniors at 153.
Brian Inouye won A Flight by 16 shots with a net score of 132.
Livsey earns Mid-Am berth
Jay Livsey birdied two his last four holes at Leilehua Tuesday to claim Hawaii’s lone qualifying spot in next month’s 39th U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.
Livsey fired a 2-under-par 69 to beat Joshua Irving by one and Isaac Jaffurs by three. Those two are Hawaii’s alternates.
There were 18 in the field. The national championship in Colorado has a field of 264, and received 4,751 entries.
Hawaii’s Tyler Ota got an exemption into the Mid-Am — for golfers 25-older — for being No. 267 in the current World Amateur Golf Ranking.
