Hawaii’s teams finished second and third at the Mary Cave Cup earlier this month in El Cajon, Calif.
The pairing of Myah McDonald and Kyung Eun Lee put together rounds of 68-65 to finish two shots behind champion Southern California 2, which shot 13 under. The Hawaii team had seven birdies and no bogeys the final day.
Jennifer Koga and Shayna Lu closed with a 66 to take third, another shot back.
Lee (77-68) and Lu (73-72) tied for third individually, two shots behind the medalist. Koga (73—147) tied for sixth and McDonald (74—148) ninth.
The Cup, which features 18 teams from the West Coast and Canada, was established in 2003.
Also this month, Peter Jung finished a shot out of first individually to help Hawaii take third in the 51st Eddie Hogan Cup team matches in Portland.
Jung’s final-round 67 left him at 3-under 141, a shot behind medalist Luke Potter, from San Diego Junior Golf. Hawaii’s Jacob Torres (68—147) earned a share of 11th.
Hawaii, which also had Davis Lee (75—149) and Kolbe Irei (77—164), shot team scores of 227-210 to end up seven shots behind the winning team from Oregon. There were 12 teams from the Western U.S. and Canada.
Island Pacific Golf Academy advances to regional in Nevada
Captain Oliver Oliquiano’s Island Pacific Golf Academy team defeated Oahu Public, 7.5-4.5, last month at Kapolei. It will represent Aloha PGA at the PGA Junior League Section Regionals, Sept. 14-15 in Boulder City, Nev.
Team members are: Ireland Roberts, Achilles Pihi, Mathias Mafi, Connor Koyano, Jon Grondolsky, Ava and Mia Cepeda, Benjamin Luafalealo, Ethan Abella and Coel Berardy.
Get Golf Ready’s next session set for Aug. 29 at Ko Olina
Session 6 of Get Golf Ready begins at Ko Olina Aug. 29. The five-class series costs $129, with beginner, intermediate and advanced classes available.
Ko Olina is also celebrating Patriot Golf Month in September, joining more than 30 Hawaii courses to raise funds for the Folds of Honor Foundation.
The foundation provides educational scholarships for children and spouses of America’s disabled and fallen service members.
The month also features special rates for all active duty military, retirees, reservists and dependents. Kamaaina with military ID are $65 and non-residents $160.
