It was a scary moment for Hawaiian Airlines Flight 47 last Thursday when the cabin filled with smoke shortly before its arrival at Daniel K. Inouye International. But once safety was assured, it was also a moment to be grateful that people were following protocols and that exit from the craft proceeded smoothly.
That’s when it’s time to be thankful for crew training, above all. And it’s a reminder of why, when that passenger safety speech is given on takeoff, everyone should pay attention.
Take care of our heat-stressed corals
This summer’s warmer-than-usual ocean temperatures have prompted an unwelcome forecast. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration advises that Hawaii’s coral reefs are entering a major bleaching event within the next two months.
To help marine life survive the event, remember: avoid touching corals and use reef-safe sunscreens; and boaters, use mooring buoys or anchor only in sand areas. Also, swimmers, snorkelers and divers are encouraged to report when and where they spot bleaching and healthy corals to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Aquatic Resources.
