The Chaminade women’s volleyball team was picked second in the Pacific West Conference coaches poll released Wednesday.
The Silverswords received 124 points and one first-place vote, behind only defending conference champion Azusa Pacific, which garnered 142 points and 10 of the 12 first-place votes. Third-place Biola (115) received the other top vote.
Hawaii Hilo was picked to finish fifth and Hawaii Pacific was picked seventh.
Azusa Pacific’s Julianne Miller was chosen as the preseason player of the year.
Four players from Hawaii were named to the PacWest preseason team. Hawaii Hilo’s Bria Beale, Hawaii Pacific’s Perla Escobar and Chaminade’s Alana Handy and Emma Tecklenburg were all honored.
Hawaii’s Moniz eliminated in Tahiti
Hawaii’s Seth Moniz fell in the semifinals of the Tahiti Pro Teahupo’o to Gabriel Medina of Brazil in Teahupo’o, Tahiti, on Wednesday.
The semifinal appearance marks the best finish of Moniz’s young career. Moniz, who is in his first season on tour, defeated Brazil’s Caio Ibelli 15.60 to 12.83 in the quarterfinals.
Moniz then fell to Medina, the defending champion, in the semifinals 11.16 to 7.43. Medina faced off with Australia’s Owen Wright in a rematch of last year’s final, and Wright claimed the title with a 17.07-14.93 victory.
