Farrington is winless no more.
The Governors, a thorn in the side of Kapolei in recent years, went out west Friday night to visit the Hurricanes and subdued their hosts again — 22-8 for their first victory of the season after four losses.
Speedburner Raymond Millare — behind a hefty line led by the one-man wrecking crew otherwise known as 6-foot-7, 400-pound Faaope Laloulu — rushed for 177 yards and scored two first-half touchdowns to give Farrington the early momentum.
“It’s a steppingstone,” Laloulu said. “We’re not satisfied just yet. It’s just one win. We gotta look forward to getting more, to grow as a team and build camaraderie together and get better each week.”
Two first-quarter mistakes by Kapolei were extremely costly. On his first pass of the night, Hurricanes quarterback Noa Bailey was picked off by the Govs’ Calijah Mareko, who returned it 23 yards for a touchdown and a quick lead. Millare’s first TD, a 3-yard run, came courtesy of a fumble recovery on a Kapolei punt return by teammate Vance Amorin and it was 13-0 five minutes into the contest.
But it wasn’t just Kapolei gifts that got it done for the Govs. Their next touchdown came on a 99-yard drive after a goal-line stand. This time, Millare swept left for a 14-yard score and a 19-0 halftime bulge.
“We changed things up offensively,” Farrington coach Daniel Sanchez said. “We had to go back to what we do best. We put Faaope at guard (instead of tackle) and felt that he would make a great push. We pulled him and he created big holes. The whole offensive line made tremendous holes and the defense, which has been lights out all season, came through again tonight.”
Farrington (1-4, 1-2 OIA Open) is now 7-2 against Kapolei since 2012. The Govs continued to put the clamps down on the Hurricanes (3-3, 1-1) in the second half. Basically, they didn’t let Kapolei breathe. Linemen Peter Nethon (three sacks) and Leroy Miller (two sacks) led the Farrington defensive effort. Selau Kalani, who had a second-half interception, was part of a defensive backfield that held Bailey, the OIA Open’s leading passer, to 43 yards through the air. They also limited dangerous Hurricanes receiver De’Zhaun Stribling to three catches for 29 yards, but Stribling did account for all eight Kapolei points — on a 25-yard TD pass from backup QB Freddie Gregorio and a 2-point conversion in the fourth quarter.
“They (the Governors) ran the ball on us, slowed the game down and we made two critical errors — that pick-6 and a muffed punt,” Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez said. “We couldn’t get untracked and couldn’t make stops. It was a tough night. It was an ugly night. When we lose, it’s my fault. We told the boys — don’t let a loss define you.”
