Your local McDonald’s — home to burgers and fries, shakes and pies — also may have played host to a genuine work of art.
We’re talking an original painting by Martin Charlot, or a photograph by Kim Taylor Reece.
Several distinctive Charlot works that hung in McDonald’s restaurants now have an estimated market value of $1,000 and up. Their value was assessed recently because they will be among 10 original works to be auctioned off Nov. 23 at Sparkle and Shine, a fundraising gala to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities Hawaii.
The most valuable of the batch is Herb Kawainui Kane’s “The Story of Laka,” worth $35,000 to $40,000. The piece was commissioned for the McDonald’s local corporate office, where it was displayed for many years. Eventually it was put on public display at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, but has been in storage since the center was renovated in the mid-2000s (it reopened as the Royal Hawaiian Center).
The charity said in a statement that the other art pieces were commissioned in the late 1980s to be displayed in several McDonald’s restaurants as commemorations of Hawaiian history and culture. They were removed and put into storage as the restaurants were renovated. An international art appraiser, Wayne Morioka, appraised the paintings in preparation for the auction.
The “Laka” piece is undergoing restoration by Larry Pace of Pace Art Conservation, who authenticated the painting and is restoring it to its original state, including its original koa frame.
Kane, who died in 2011, was a co-founder of the Polynesian Voyaging Society and designer of the Hokule‘a voyaging canoe. He was an artist and historian known for paintings and murals that celebrated many aspects of Hawaiian culture, from legends and folklore to ships and oceangoing canoes.
Charlot, son of the renowned muralist Jean Charlot, grew up in Hawaii. Although known primarily as a muralist, he also completed many works in media from oils to porcelain.
The Sparkle and Shine auction also will include pieces by Reece, Sue Swerdlow, Frances Hill and other local artists, in the largest fundraising event held annually for Ronald McDonald House.
The event includes dinner, entertainment, a country store, and live and silent auctions featuring travel and dining experiences, fine jewelry, specialty wines and liquor, music and sports memorabilia and more.
This year’s gala will also feature an appearance by Denise Yamaguchi, who will sign her children’s cookbook, “Keiki in the Kitchen with Mika the Sous Chef,” filled with recipes by noted Hawaii chefs. Yamaguchi will be accompanied by her Lhasa apso puppy, Mika, and all book sales at the event will go to the Ronald McDonald charity.
Pre-event bidding for silent auction items begins Nov. 20 online at rmhc.cbo.io. All proceeds will benefit Ronald McDonald House.
Ronald McDonald House is a nonprofit that provides housing for families of seriously ill children who must travel to Oahu for medical treatment.
