Two of Farrington High School’s orchestra students have been selected to perform at Carnegie Hall in January.
Cellist Otis Mose-Smith and violist Ayla Tiposo, who are fundraising in order to be able to travel to New York, competed against high school students from all over the world. The two will be a part of the High School Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall, which runs from Jan. 30 to Feb. 3, 2020. The program culminates with a performance at the venerable concert venue under the direction of world-renowned conductor Kirt Mosier.
“It’s a highly selective program,” said Karen Miyamoto, orchestra director at Farrington High School. “I nominated a few students and two were selected to audition. They took it seriously. They prepared and practiced all summer to learn their solos.”
After submitting their audition applications, Miyamoto said senior Mose-Smith and 10th grader Tiposo told her something that was music to her ears: “ ‘Miss, we got in!’ What? You got in? That’s amazing.”
More good news: Miyamoto said Mose-Smith recently found out he has also been accepted to the High School Honors Performance Series at the Vienna Musikverein this summer.
The Honors Performance Series by WorldStrides aims to bring together some of the world’s rising young musicians to perform under master conductors.
