CrimeStoppers and Honolulu police are reminding the public to be vigilant while shopping and on the road as the bustling holiday season begins.
Sgt. Chris Kim of CrimeStoppers Honolulu urged holiday shoppers to be aware of their surroundings, especially in parking lots.
“When you’re out there shopping and you’re purchasing a lot of items and things start to get heavy, do not go back to your vehicles and empty them in your trunk,” Kim said at a Wednesday news conference at the Honolulu Police Department’s main headquarters. “There are actually criminals out there that will actually case out the parking lot and watch for people unloading things into their trunk.”
He also warned residents about “porch pirates,” thieves that swipe delivered items placed near their f ront door. Kim recommended residents have items delivered to a trusted neighbor or friend or call the designated company to reschedule the delivery time.
Residents may also want to consider installing outdoor security lights or an alarm system.
For individuals selling or buying items via Craigslist, Kim recommended against meeting people at your home but rather at a public place and to bring a friend or a family member along.
Motorists and pedestrians alike are also reminded to be alert and mindful of one another on the roads.
Of the 46 traffic-related fatalities on Oahu so far this year, 19 involved pedestrians, according to Maj. Calvin Tong of the police Traffic Division.
Of the 19 pedestrian fatalities, 16 pedestrians were not in crosswalks.
Tong added, “Don’t step off that sidewalk until you know it’s clear. Be cognizant of your surroundings.”
His advice to motorists: “We want them to drive with aloha. Be patient.”
Party-goers are also reminded to have a designated driver or call a taxi.
