Longtime cartoonist and artist Jon J. Murakami is set to release a new collection of comic strips later this month. “Calabash Vol. 1: Do We Even Know Half of These People?” is a compilation of strips that were featured in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and the Honolulu Star-Advertiser from 2001 to 2010.
The strip, which appears every other week on this page, highlights the quirkiness of life in Hawaii. Edited by Jason S. Yadao (a former copy editor at both papers), the 64-page book, with color and black-and-white comic strips, briefly discusses how Murakami was first featured in the Star-Bulletin and then landed at the Star-Advertiser. Each strip is accompanied by cultural notes and Murakami’s thought process behind the toons.
Murakami will attend the Amazing Comic Con Aloha on Feb. 21-23 at the Hawai‘i Convention Center, where he will debut the book and have a limited number of copies for sale. Each book is $20. To order, go to jonjmurakami.bigcartel.com. (Due to small-batch publishing, orders may take up to 14 days to arrive after the release date.)
