Kamehameha Maui claims middle school Makahiki crown
Nearly 200 students from nine schools enjoyed a day of culture and competition during the third annual Maui Middle School Makahiki Championships, held Jan. 31 at Maui High School.
Kamehameha Schools Maui was named overall champion, collecting 99 points from nine events featuring traditional Hawaiian sports. The team was coached by Jaime Palakiko, Trudi Vierra, Mike Tom and Sharron Pali. Maui Waena Intermediate, coached by Adrienne Pulu, finishing second with 85 points, and Hana, coached by Kaleihanamau Johnson, placed third with 62 points.
None of the contestants was able to score the nine points needed to win the $1,000 Spear Throwing Challenge. Kamehameha Schools Maui sixth grader Ramzak Fruean came closest with a high score of six points. After missing with his first spear, Fruean landed three spears in the two-point zone.
Maui High School students served as tournament officials, demonstrating leadership, critical thinking and communication skills, according to a news release.
“We are excited to provide this opportunity for our schools and communities,” said Renolds Fruean, director of the Makahiki Athletic Association cultural sports program, in a news release.
“We believe sport is an effective educational tool to transmit important life skills, inspire school spirit and create a sense of identity.”
