                                Duke Kahanamoku came down with the Spanish flu in 1918 at the end of a 30-city swimming tour to raise money for the American Red Cross. He nearly died, and it cost him an opportunity to join the Air Corps. Kahanamoku runs in the surf on Waikiki Beach in the late 1920s.

I’ve written quite a bit about Duke Kahanamoku in the past, but only recently found out he came down with the Spanish flu and nearly died from it. And it prevented him from what he thought at the time was his life’s ambition. Read more
