Duke Kahanamoku came down with the Spanish flu in 1918 at the end of a 30-city swimming tour to raise money for the American Red Cross. He nearly died, and it cost him an opportunity to join the Air Corps. Kahanamoku runs in the surf on Waikiki Beach in the late 1920s.
