Among the unsettling details described in a class action lawsuit against the state alleging failure to protect inmates from the coronavirus: Hilo jail inmates sleeping on mats spaced just inches away from one another, after testing positive for COVID-19. It’s not surprising then that the long-overcrowded Hawaii Community Correctional Center’s current outbreak count includes more than 200 inmates.
Earlier this month there reportedly were 344 inmates in a space that was designed for just 206. The state should find a way to fast-track its $15 million project to expand the jail, a job that should’ve been completed this year, but now won’t be done till 2024.
Hunt’s on for rental cars during shortage

Alternative sources have helped, and the Hawaii Tourism Authority is coordinating some of that information for visitors. And they’re using it. Hui Cars, the local app for single-day rentals, did not take off immediately, but now is displaying “we’re currently experiencing high-volume use” warnings.
Those tourists with family or friends with wheels for loan may be the luckiest.
