Kailua and Punahou will usher in the return of prep football on Oahu with a matchup at Alex Kane Stadium on Aug. 6.
That game is one of three in interleague play on weekend one of the 2021 season. High school football has not been played on an official league basis since the fall of 2019. In the spring of ’21, Kamehameha, Punahou and Saint Louis competed in controlled, non-league scrimmages.
Though no league in the islands has officially declared a fall sports season, the schedule says it all. On Aug. 7, Radford will host Damien and Kaiser will play at ‘Iolani in Division I matchups.
One of the most noticeable regular-season openers will pit Kahuku at Mililani on Aug. 13. Another intriguing matchup: ILH D-I powerhouse ‘Iolani at recently promoted Roosevelt on that same date.
Scrimmages are set to begin on July 29, 10 days after the official start of football season. Coaches across the state are cautiously optimistic about bringing along first-year varsity players who never got to develop in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and cancellation of league-sanctioned prep football in the islands.
“We are really just looking to evaluate what we have and what these kids can do,” Damien coach Eddie Klaneski said. “Most of them have never stepped on the field on the varsity level, and we just want to see how they compete with someone else. If we can see improvement and understanding of what we are trying to do, then we will be happy. Just looking forward to the opportunity to be back out there.”
‘Iolani coach Wendell Look, who also coordinates football for the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, is exercising a patient approach.
“We’re looking at evaluation of personnel, and progress in learning and execution of offensive, defensive and special teams packages,” Look said.
