For those who think a two-year hiatus for Maunawili Falls Trail is too long, think again. Trail restoration is needed after all the stress from hikers, and a lot of issues need solving in the master-planning process, such as providing parking apart from residential areas. Such closures should be considered for other trails, too.
Meanwhile, people can be dropped off at the Pali Highway scenic overlook to reach the falls. Traffic there might be a concern — though good news for Uber and Lyft drivers.
High demand for low mortgage rates
For local prospective home buyers, it’s a classic case of the glass being half-full, half-empty.
Mortgage rates have dropped to extreme lows: the 30-year home loan was at 2.9% late last week; the rate for a 15-year loan fell to 2.2%. That’s great news for would-be buyers needing to finance the big purchase.
But housing inventory here been in short supply, with bidding wars fetching even humble homes well above sellers’ asking prices. And don’t be surprised if some of the buying competition is coming from outside Hawaii.
