In May, Washington Middle School sustained a sinister ambush from the powers that be. Michael Harano, the accomplished and respected principal administrator with 30-plus years of service, was unceremoniously pulled from his position with no warning or explanation. At least three teachers who had already been hired for the upcoming school year were also yanked from WMS with no explanation. They were informed on the last teacher day of the school year.
The hostile takeover stripped the entire staff of respect and trust.
Up until that time, WMS provided a positive, vibrant, forward-thinking and hopeful setting for its diverse student population and their families. The campus is now a suppressed, unhappy place. Mr. Harano’s once-welcoming office is now a fearful space devoid of personality and compassion.
The state Department of Education did Mike Harano and all of Washington Middle School a grave misdeed, and it needs to be corrected.
