A new semester means new beginnings for students and, apparently, Skyline. The not-yet-completed rail system set a weekday ridership record of 14,143 rides on Aug. 26, when students and commuters trying to beat the back-to-school crush opted to grab their Holo card instead of car keys. According to the Honolulu Department of Transportation Services, that number is up from an average 13,478 weekday rides between Aug. 24 and Aug. 28 — a promising sign that Skyline is catching on.
DTS predicts ridership will increase as additional stations come online. Skyline’s two operating segments connect East Kapolei to the Kalihi Transit Center at Middle Street, and a third segment is under construction to take the line to Kakaako’s Civic Center by March 2031.
