‘Iolani opened ILH play with wins over Punahou and Kamehameha, then collected all eight first-place votes to remain atop the Girls Volleyball Top 10 this week.
The Raiders host Mid-Pacific tonight. The Owls are a team now at their highest perch of the season, No. 4.
No. 2 Moanalua has a rematch with No. 7 Kahuku on Wednesday in a key OIA East battle. Kahuku lost at home to Moanalua in a league opener on Aug. 31.
Kamehameha is No. 3, Mililani No. 5 and Punahou No. 6
Despite a loss to King Kekaulike, Kamehameha-Maui moved up a notch to No. 8. Kamehameha-Hawaii lost to Waiakea in five sets and dropped to No. 9.
Waiakea entered the rankings at No. 10, sharing the spot with Maryknoll. The Warriors are the only unbeaten team (6-0) in BIIF play after their five-set win over Kamehameha-Hawaii.
Coincidentally, King Kekaulike beat Kamehameha-Hawaii early in the season (Aug. 20) at the Lee Ann DeLima tournament in Pukalani.
Three teams are heading to the desert this week to play in the Durango Fall Classic: ‘Iolani, Kamehameha and KS-Hawaii. The two-day tournament is played at multiple high school gyms in Las Vegas.
‘Iolani will arrive in Nevada ranked No. 18 nationally by MaxPreps. Kamehameha is ranked No. 75.
Kamehameha-Hawaii players had a limited number of practices due to Hurricane Lala last month, but volleyball life is good. Very good. They fly to the tournament with a fairly young team.
“The purpose of going to Durango is simple: compete, grow and make memories together,” coach Zoe Leonard said. “There is no other high school opportunity like this to compete against the absolute best programs in the nation.”
Time permitting, they hope to see Hawaii play Iowa State on Saturday.
“There is no limit to how much fun can be had,” Leonard said.

Trojans almost unanimous in football
Mililani collected 10 of 11 first-place votes in this week’s Star-Advertiser Football Top 10. The Trojans blanked Leilehua 43-0 on Saturday night and improved to 5-0 overall.
Mililani hosts No. 2 Kahuku, which received one first-place vote, on Saturday.
Campbell’s bounce-back from a season-opening loss to Waipahu is in full force. The Sabers edged previously unbeaten Kapolei 17-14 and jumped one spot to No. 3.
Kamehameha got a jump in the ILH Open Division with a 16-6 win over Punahou. Kamehameha swapped places with the Buffanblu and is now No. 5.
Waipahu moved up to No. 6 and has a big test on Friday when No. 10 Aiea visits.
