The North Shore Chamber of Commerce today opened a visitor information and resource center in a newly-restored historic building in Haleiwa.

The building, built in 1924 and relocated to the grounds of the Waialua Community Association, originally housed the Mutual Telephone Co. It was donated in 2006 to the chamber by the Fujiwara family.

The plantation-style, one-story building is on the state’s inventory of historic buildings. Business services including printing, faxing and Internet will be offered from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Hours will be expanded as volunteers are trained. 

The visitor center will begin offering historical tours of Haleiwa Town, Waialua Town, temples and graveyards by the end of July.

The project was completed through donations and grants, as well as volunteer labor, the chamber said in a press release.

The chamber will install a new board of directors as part of a grand opening celebration today that includes contractors, volunteers and donors who helped to complete the project.
