Memorial service for Andy Irons set for Sunday

LIHUE — A memorial service for famed surfer Andy Irons is set for Sunday at Waioli Beach Park on his home island of Kauai.

The 11 a.m. service will include an honorary paddle-out to pay tribute to his legacy, which includes three world championships in as many years.

Kauai County officials warn the park is expected to be crowded, with limited parking in the area. They say traffic in and out of Hanalei will likely be heavy also.

The 32-year-old Irons was found dead Nov. 2 in his Dallas-area hotel Tuesday. The cause of death is being investigated.

Irons was on a layover en route back home. He was returning from Puerto Rico, where he was supposed to compete in the 2010 Rip Curl Pro Search. He withdrew, however, saying he had become ill.
