Nobel laureate to address UH Manoa commencement

Nobel Prize-winning physicist Samuel C.C. Ting is set to address graduates of the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Ting will be the commencement speaker on Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center. The ceremony is due to begin at 9 a.m.

Ting and Burton Richter were co-awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1976 for their pioneering work in the discovery of a “heavy elementary particle of a new kind.”

He also is the Thomas Dudley Cabot Professor of Physics at the MIT Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass.

More than 800 UH students are to receive bachelor’s degrees, and more than 300 will receive master’s and doctorate degrees, and post-baccalaureate certificates in secondary education.
