Hawaii Supreme Court censures Honolulu lawyer

The Hawaii Supreme Court has issued a public censure against a Honolulu lawyer after he was convicted of violating state tax laws.

A statement from the court on Wednesday said Thomas Collins III received the censure after his deferred acceptance of guilty and no contest pleas on several counts that he failed to file state income and general excise tax returns.

The order states that Collins agreed that his failure to submit the returns violated Hawaii’s Rules of Professional Conduct.

A court spokeswoman said the justices could have disbarred, suspended or publicly reprimanded Collins, but instead chose censure.

She said Collins can still practice law.
