Hawaii civil unions bill passed by final committee

A measure extending marriage rights to same-sex couples is heading to a full House vote after getting approval from its final committee.

The House Judiciary Committee voted 11-2 on Tuesday to pass civil unions legislation following nearly 5 hours of public testimony.

The panel made several minor amendments to the bill, meaning it would have to return to the Senate for further consideration if it passes the full House. The Senate already passed a version of the bill last month.

The House could vote on the bill as soon as Friday, and new Democratic Gov. Neil Abercrombie has said he would sign it into law.

The measure would grant many of the rights of marriage to same-sex couples without authorizing marriage itself
