The Pearl City girls basketball team is wasting no time getting off to a good start in the OIA this season.
The Chargers (3-0) stayed unbeaten with a convincing 56-40 win over Waianae at Pearl City on Wednesday night, getting 14 points from Shawna Angle and 11 from Adrienne Jean Sylva.
Perhaps they got all of their misses out of the way at halftime of the JV game, when they hit the floor and began running drills the minute the buzzer sounded. Waianae followed suit about a minute later. The scene repeated itself as soon as the buzzer sounded to end the JV game.
“That’s just us, we always do it that way,” Pearl City coach Michael Morton said. “The girls are doing good and just having fun.”
The Seariders (1-2) remained a step behind the Chargers when their game began, trailing through the entire first quarter as Pearl City ran up a 14-7 lead.
Konawaena No. 13 in USA Today
Konawaena has landed in the USA Today Super 25 girls basketball rankings at No. 13.
The Wildcats were unranked by USA Today until sweeping Bishop Gorman (Nev.), Oregon City and then-No. 11 Brea Olinda (Calif.) to win the ‘Iolani Classic. Brea Olinda dropped to No. 15.
Konawaena is also ranked in the ESPN Powerade Fab 50 this week at No. 43. The team will play in the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, Ariz., starting on Monday.
Konawaena is the defending state champion and is No. 1 in the Star-Advertiser Top 10.

The Seariders fought back to within two points, 14-12, in the second quarter but the Chargers took over from there. Pearl City went on a 15-2 run on seven points by Shawna Angle and four by Sabrina Angle. The Seariders regrouped after they put the ball in Pearl City’s basket on an inbounds play, but the 31-18 halftime margin was too much to overcome.
Kaitlyn Kaahaaina carried Waianae with 14 points but only hit one basket, a 3-pointer, in the second half.
Kapolei showed up to check out the Chargers, who host the Hurricanes on Tuesday after a test against Nanakuli on Saturday, and they got a good look. The Chargers had six different players score in the first half and seven in the game. Pearl City hit three 3-pointers, but Kapolei can expect to see a few more when they hook up.
“We didn’t hit our outside shot the way we usually do,” Morton said. “But we made up for it with good passing and playing good defense. Even though we were missing them, the girls kept shooting. That’s good.”
