Damien Memorial School quarterback Alan Mohika, who suffered bleeding on the brain and a concussion during a Friday night game against Moanalua High School, will not play football for the remainder of his senior season, but does plan to play catcher on Damien’s baseball team, he said today from the neurology unit at the Queen’s Medical Center.

Mohika, who is one of Damien’s defensive and offensive captains, has to undergo speech and physical therapy and does not know when he will be discharged from Queen’s, he said.

The 5-foot, 7-inch quarterback and defensive back got hit while completing a touchdown pass. 

He said he does not remember the hit.

Last year, he suffered a less-severe concussion during a football scrimmage against Kailua High School, his mother, Nohea said.

Nohea and Floyd Mohika of Kaneohe have an older son, David, 22, who suffered a concussion while playing catcher for Castle High School, Nohea said.

Their youngest son, Ryan, a ninth-grader who plays running back and linebacker on Castle High School’s junior varsity team, suffered a concussion on Aug. 1.

But Nohea said she and Floyd will allow the younger boys to keep playing competitive contact sports.

“They love it,” Nohea said. “My boys are athletes.”
