OVERFLOWING WITH FLOWERS | The arms of the Duke Kahanamoku statue at Waikiki Beach yesterday bore a bounty of lei.

Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle will sign a goodwill pact with an Australian city that has ties to surf legend Duke Kahanamoku.

Carlisle and Warringah Council Mayor Michael Regan are to sign the agreement Wednesday in front of the Kahanamoku statue in Waikiki.

Kahanamoku is known as the father of modern surfing who won multiple Olympic medals. He won three gold medals for swimming, two silver medals for swimming and one bronze for water polo.

Officials say that in 1915, he visited Warringah Council’s Freshwater Beach and introduced surfing to Australia.

The Honolulu mayor’s office says Honolulu is celebrating and strengthening its historical ties with Warringah Council by forming a “Goodwill Beach City” relationship.
