Big Island credit union member data breached

KAILUA-KONA » Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union’s president says employees improperly accessed personal information of several hundred members nearly a year ago.

President James Takamine tells West Hawaii Today the credit union did not notify members until this week, while an independent attorney conducted an investigation. He says that at this point, there doesn’t appear to be any risk of identity theft.

Takamine says less than 500 of the credit union’s 40,000 members were affected by the data breach. He says only the last four digits of Social Security numbers were accessed.

Some of the employees involved were terminated.

Employees will go through a new training process on policies prohibiting accessing members’ information. A new website will allow employees to anonymously report suspicious activity of co-workers.
