Vegas airport showgirl tradition upstaged by Obama

LAS VEGAS >> The showgirls and Elvis impersonators who typically appear at the Las Vegas airport when a new airline starts flying there are getting sidelined by the president’s visit

Officials with McCarran International Airport say they won’t hold the festive welcome tradition when Dutch airline ArkeFly begins service Thursday. That’s because President Barack Obama and his vast security staff will arrive at the airport for an official visit less than two hours later.

A McCarran spokesman tells the Las Vegas Sun (http://bit.ly/Kes7T4) that ArkeFly representatives aren’t bothered that the flight’s getting upstaged by the Commander in Chief, and weren’t planning on sending an executive on the inaugural flight anyway.

Airport officials say the glitzy greeting may be rescheduled later.

Obama will speak at University of Nevada, Las Vegas around 1 p.m. Thursday.
