State crews battle brush fire in Waianae forest reserve

Firefighters from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources continued to battle a brush fire today that likely spread to the lower slopes of the Waianae Kai Forest Reserve.

DLNR personnel concentrated their efforts on ground control, addressing one flare-up and trying to prevent the fire from reaching the top of the ridge, where it might endanger plants and native tree snails.

It is believed to be the same fire, on a different front, that federal and county firefighters fought last week and that came over a ridge into Waianae valley.

The fire, which blackened some 400 acres of the forest reserve, was 90 percent contained as of Sunday night.

Division of Forestry and Wildlife officials have warned the public not to enter the reserve area due to continued risk of the fire spreading.
