Exhibit cheers Japanese-American athletes
A new exhibit spotlighting Japanese-American amateur athletes will be on display Saturday through Sept. 29 at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai‘i.
An opening ceremony for "Pride of Hawai‘i: Japanese American Amateur Athletes" will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
The exhibit is divided into three sections: Olympic stars, national champions and all-Americans. Among those featured are University of Hawaii women’s volleyball coach Dave Shoji and Olympic gold medalists Ford Konno (swimming), Tommy Kono (weightlifting) and Bryan Clay (decathlon).
In conjunction with the exhibit, Kono will talk story and sign copies of his book "Championship Weightlifting" at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 25 in the center’s Gallery Theater.

Get the skinny on skin from YWCA talk
Sort out the facts and myths about sunshine, sunscreen and vitamin D in a "Love the Skin You’re In" presentation from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 9 at the YWCA’s Fuller Hall at 1040 Richards St.
Dr. Amy Reisenauer, chief of dermatology for Kaiser Permanente, will discuss tips for skin health, skin spots and related topics at the event, which will also offer skin analysis, Clarisonic skin-cleansing demonstrations and gift certificate giveaways for aesthetic services from Kaiser Permanente.
The presentation is part of the Women’s Health Lecture Series sponsored by the YWCA and Kaiser.

Dog days set for 2 upcoming Sundays
Pamper your pooch during spa days for dogs to benefit the Hawaiian Humane Society.
The events will take place from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday and Aug. 12 at Ward Warehouse. Dogs can get washed and massaged, and get their nails painted — all for donations to the animal-welfare agency.
Fundraiser will benefit foster kids
The fifth annual Giovanna’s Goddess Gala from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 26 will raise money to benefit Hawaii’s foster children.
The event will be held at artist Giovanna Neuman’s Kahala home in support of Family Program Hawaii’s Project Visitation, which was created by the 1st Circuit’s Family Court and the state Department of Human Services to provide monthly visitation and special events for siblings separated by the foster care system. The program relies entirely on private contributions and grants.
The gala will include a buffet lunch, dancing to live music by Simplisity, a silent auction, psychics and healing arts booths.
