Rover’s landing launches research for UH scientist

John Hinrichs had his fingers crossed Sunday as he watched a live NASA video of Curiosity, the Mars robotic explorer, approaching the surface of Mars. Hinrichs joined a group at the Pacific Ocean Science and Technology building at the University of Hawaii at Manoa to watch the historic landing.

About 20 University of Hawaii faculty members, students and community members watched the successful landing of the NASA rover Curiosity on the surface of Mars on Sunday at the Pacific Ocean Science and Technology building. UH?geologist Scott Rowland, right, and his son Kai, 7, applauded the landing.
