Officials still optimistic despite 4.7% rise in homeless population

Donna Mendoza, who has lived on the streets for a decade, took it easy Thursday on Kalakaua Avenue. Mendoza said she “got kicked out of Waianae” seven years ago and has been in Waikiki ever since. “I’m trying to make a go of it, but it’s hard,” she said. “I’ve been to job fairs, but nobody wants me.”

Jay, who is from the West Coast, held a sign Thursday declaring he is homeless and hungry as he sat beside Kalakaua Avenue. Hawaii is “a good place to be homeless,” the 32-year-old said.
