Calvin Liu, musical director of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace in Hono­lulu, wore an aloha shirt bearing images of Mother Marianne Cope as he played an ukulele to accompany Hawaiian music at the Franciscan Church of the Assumption for what church officials believe is the first time in the church’s 145-year history. Singing with Liu was Robert Mondoy, wearing an identical Cope-inspired aloha shirt.

Clarence “Boogie” Kahilihiwa and eight other Hansen’s disease patients from Kalaupapa arrived in Syracuse, N.Y., on Saturday to honor Mother Marianne Cope, who will become the Patron Saint of Outcasts in the Vatican on Oct. 21 for her work in Kalaupapa on Molokai.
