Hawaii youth receive national leadership awards

Three young adults from Hawaii who once spent time in foster care are being nationally recognized for their outstanding leadership skills.

The state Department of Human Services said Wednesday Gernani Yutob, Jr. is a recipient of the 2013 FosterClub Award.

Yutob spent four years in foster care, including time at group homes and other facilities. Today he’s a facilitator at EPIC Ohana where he helps people aging out of foster care.

Nanglar Worachit is receiving the 2013 Outstanding FosterClub Leadership Award. She bounced between 15 foster care placements growing up. She is now vice president of the HI H.O.P.E.S. Youth Leadership Board.

Robert Heanu-Toyama is receiving a FosterClub Award. He spent eight years in the foster care system. He’s now a youth outreach coordinator with the Hawaii Foster Youth Coalition.
