Ching ties for sixth after 3 rounds
Punahou product Alex Ching shot a 75 to drop to a tie for sixth in the eGolf Tour Championship at Hilton Head, S.C., on Friday.
Ching carded a 68 in the first round and a 65 in the second — he sits at 8-under par.
Ryan Nelson of Charleston, S.C., leads the tournament by six strokes with one round left. Nelson is at 18 under par with Peter Malnati of Danridge, Tenn., at 12 under. The winner receives $50,000.
Leilehua grad Nick Mason shot a 71 to rise to 19th at 5 under par and former Moanalua standout Tadd Fujikawa shot a 77 to sit in 62nd place at 2 over par.
Kono in 60th place in LPGA’s final stage
Punahou alum Stephanie Kono shot 1-over 73 on Friday and is tied for 60th place after 54 holes in the LPGA Qualifying Tournament Final Stage in Dayton Beach, Fla.
Kono is at 2-over 218. Hilo’s Britney Yada shot 74 and is in 111th place at 7 over.
The field of 154 will be cut to the low 70 and ties after 72 holes. The top 20 after Sunday’s final round will receive LPGA membership. All who finish 72 holes receive status on the Symetra Tour.
Silverswords snap losing streak
Junior guard James Harper broke out for 23 points as the Chaminade men’s basketball team beat UH Hilo 94-89 on Thursday at McCabe Gym in both teams’ PacWest opener.
The win broke a three-game losing streak for Chaminade (3-3). The Vulcans dropped to 4-3.
Kevin Hu helped Chaminade’s cause with 18 points on only one miss from the floor. Joey Rodriguez led Hilo with 21 points and Tre Johnson and Vandyon Lockett each scored 19.
» Jordan Stone scored 13 points and Brigham Young-Hawaii beat Hawaii Pacific 75-61 at the Neal Blaisdell Center on Thursday.
The Seasiders (5-0, 1-0) had four players score in double figures to counteract Luke Hager’s 28 for the Sharks (3-2, 0-1). Hawaii Pacific hosts UH Hilo on Saturday at 3 p.m., while Chaminade travels to BYUH for a 5 p.m. game.
