Live flare found on beach in Kahuku
Volunteers cleaning up a beach Saturday morning near the Kahuku Golf Course found what appeared to be unexploded ordnance in the bushes, a spokesman for the Honolulu Fire Department said.
A military explosive ordnance disposal team investigated the item and identified it as a type of flare used during military exercises that had not gone off, Capt. Gary Lum said.
The suspicious item was found around 9:30 a.m. near the golf course. The person who found the object called 911, and the area was closed off while firefighters, military and police investigated.
Lum said his personnel reported that the flare is typically used as a marker on the ocean that burns a very bright white light during military drills or nighttime exercises.
"When the military EOD (team) evaluated it, it appeared to be still alive and they took it away to Schofield to the firing range" where it will be destroyed, he said.
Man in critical condition after stabbing
A man in his 40s was critically injured in the Punchbowl area Friday night after he was stabbed, an Emergency Medical Services official said.
Police said two men were identified and detained in connection with the stabbing that occurred about 9:15 p.m. on Prospect Street. The victim was taken by ambulance to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition.
Police arrest suspect in knife attack
Police arrested a man in his 40s Friday night for allegedly attacking a 24-year-old man with a kitchen knife in Waianae, according to police dispatch.
The man was in serious condition after suffering an 8-inch cut to his head. He was also hit with a metal pipe and a wooden stick, according to an Emergency Medical Services radio transmission.
Paramedics responded to the attack at about 8:30 p.m. Friday at a Helelua Street address.
The 24-year-old was taken by ambulance to the Queen’s Medical Center in serious condition, authorities said.
