Kudos to government officials on Maui who recently put together an ocean-safety brochure for visitors to the island.

The publication is much-needed there, where ocean-related deaths last year reached 21. Along with a map of the island’s popular beaches, it offers advice on how to avoid drowning and even shark attacks, of which Maui has had a few in recent years.

The four-color brochure, funded by Maui County, was produced by Maui’s Office of the Mayor and its Office of Economic Development, in consultation with Maui’s police, fire and parks departments, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources and the U.S. Coast Guard.

The next step is for all of the island’s tourism-related businesses to make sure that the brochures get into the hands of their customers.

Cruising with John Fogerty — and John Cruz

Rock legend John Fogerty, in town for last Friday’s concert at the Blaisdell, confessed that this had been his first performance in Honolulu since appearing with the rest of Creedence Clearwater Revival four decades ago.

But somewhere in there, he continued to appreciate Hawaii, including its music. From the stage, Fogerty gave a shout-out to John Cruz, ranking his hit "Island Style" among his favorites.

High praise for the Hawaii artist, whose appeal apparently goes "from the mountain to the ocean, from the windward to the leeward side" — and beyond.
