Robby Mann scored on a layup with one second to play as No. 5 ‘Iolani escaped with a 50-48 win over No. 10 Maryknoll on Tuesday night at Clarence T.C. Ching Gymnasium.
With 6.3 seconds to play, the visiting Raiders had the ball near midcourt. The ball was passed in to Hugh Hogland, who handed the ball off to point guard Erik Yamada. The senior dribbled toward the bucket on the left side, then dished across the key to Mann, who put the ball high off the glass and through the net for the win. Mann finished with 13 points, all in the second half.
"I was supposed to set a curl screen, and Hugh was supposed to pass the ball and I would throw a lob for a layup," Mann said of a plan that didn’t go exactly by the book. "Erik drove to the baseline and he saw me, luckily. I thought he was going to dish it off to Hugh, but he was triple-teamed and my shot was lucky."
‘Iolani improved to 3-2 in the rough ILH race, getting 16 points, 10 rebounds and two assists from Hogland, a 6-foot-8 sophomore.
The Spartans dropped to 1-4 in league play despite 25 points and five boards by 6-5 sophomore Justice Sueing Jr. Three of Maryknoll’s four losses in the ILH have been by one or two points, and the fourth loss was by eight.
It’s the defensive end where the very young Spartans have occasional lapses. On the final play, they collapsed on Hogland and let Mann, a 6-1 junior, roam freely to the weak side of the play.
"We weren’t prepared for (Hogland) to catch the ball," Maryknoll coach Kelly Grant said. "We had to scramble."
Maryknoll came out in man defense for that final play, the same as the Spartans had used all night.
"We thought Robby was going to be open one way or another, whether it was with Erik driving or on a pass backdoor," ‘Iolani coach Dean Shimamoto said. "Or if Hugh gets a pass, (Mann) would be trailing. Six-and-a-half seconds is a long time. A lot of things had to go right, seemingly a lot of simple things, but we didn’t do a lot of simple things right tonight. To be able to finish that way is great."
Hogland has been playing at another level in recent games.
"He struggled a little bit in the first half getting the ball in the hole, but he kept with it in the second half and kind of got a soccer assist on that last play," Shimamoto said. "He scored on some important plays down the stretch."
It was another frustrating finish for the Spartans despite a strong offensive performance in the clutch. Down 46-43 with a minute to play, Maryknoll guard Calvin Koo was fouled in the right corner on a 3-point shot and went to the line. The senior sank all three of his free-throw attempts to tie the game.
‘Iolani answered with a power move in the low post by Hogland, who was fouled by 6-5 freshman Brian Washington on the play. Washington fouled out, but Hogland missed the ensuing and-1 free throw and it was 48-46 with 46 seconds remaining.
Sueing, who was 13-for-15 from the charity stripe, hit two foul shots to tie the game with 22.7 seconds left.
The Raiders then turned the ball over on a pass by Yamada (six points, five assists) that was deflected by Koo on the left wing. Koo raced upcourt without full control of the ball and was called for an illegal dribble past midcourt. That gave the ball to ‘Iolani with 6.3 ticks left.
The Spartans led for most of the first half, taking a 15-10 lead after back-to-back buckets by Sueing, who was 6-for-14 from the field. Point guard Michael Miske’s left-handed scoop shot with Hogland defending gave Maryknoll a 21-18 lead just before halftime.
Hogland was in beast mode in that second quarter with six points, eight boards and a block. His move on the low post for a basket gave ‘Iolani a 26-25 lead in the third quarter, and the Raiders opened the margin to 35-29 after Kamu Borden scored on a low-post move of his own.
Miske’s wing 3 brought the Spartans within 42-40 midway through the fourth quarter. Down the stretch, though, the Raiders came up with some key plays, like a patented backdoor cut by Mann, who got a perfect pass from Yamada for a layup and a 44-40 lead.
"We’ve got to keep pushing each other at practice. Our intensity on defense — we’re still letting easy stuff happen," Sueing said. "Easy back cuts happen. Coach knows we’re fine. We’re young, but it’s those little errors that mess us up."
