Welcome to the 21st century, Waikiki.

Thanks to a partnership between the city and Oceanic Time Warner Cable, Wi-Fi has come to the state’s tourism hub.

Folks are now able to connect for a free Internet hour daily, at 40 megabits per second.

The city also has created splash pages that give users in Waikiki easy access to information such as ocean safety and conditions, as well as to events like the Honolulu Marathon.

The free one hour might seem limiting to some — but hey, it’s the beach and scenic Waikiki; electronics should be stowed in order to allow full appreciation of the natural surroundings.

ERS not taking losses lying down

Dismal news broke in recent days for anyone concerned about the health of the state’s Employees’ Retirement System.

Of course, that includes the public worker retirees depending on that pension fund, but it really includes all taxpayers who are ultimately bound by obligations to fulfill contractual benefits.

But it’s good to see that the state is not taking losses to the fund lying down.

The state attorney general’s office is pursuing multiple lawsuits over misconduct by companies in which the fund invests — malfeasance that may have produced the losses.

Let’s hope this newly aggressive posture will pay off.
