Firefighters return to Nanakuli Valley to extinguish hot spots

Honolulu firefighters returned today to extinguish smoldering hot spots in the burned-out area caused by a wildfire that started last week in Nanakuli Valley.

Honolulu Fire Department Capt. David Jenkins said firefighters and a fire helicopter went back Wednesday afternoon in response to a call about smoldering in the back of the valley.

He said firefighters assessed the perimeter and a fire helicopter made water drops on hot spots well within the burned out area.

He said the fire was no longer moving. The wildfire erupted March 17 and burned largely unconfined for about three days, burning about 2,500 acres of brush in the mountains.
