Though not surprising, it was still dispiriting to hear Stefan Jankovic announcing his departure from the University of Hawaii basketball team, less than two weeks after UH’s NCAA tourney showing.
The Big West Player of the Year is forsaking his senior year at UH to try his luck in the NBA draft, come June 23. We wish him well, as did his now-former coach, Eran Ganot.
The NCAA sanction barring UH from post-season play next year is being contested — and on behalf of the team’s coaches and players who had no part in the previous regime’s transgressions, we fervently hope the penalty will be lifted. Further, let’s hope the sanction won’t affect the decision-making of other seniors-to-be, spurring them prematurely to follow “Janks“ out the UH door.
