Punahou leads David Ishii/HHSAA Boy’s Golf Championships after day one.

The Punahou boys golf team’s quest for a fourth consecutive state championship and seventh in nine years got off to an ideal start at the Wailua Golf Course in Lihue, Kauai on Friday.

As a team, the Buffanblu shot 294, 10 strokes ahead of current runner-up Moanalua. ‘Iolani sits in third at 321 while fourth place Waiakea (330) is only eight strokes separated by ninth place Mililani. Kamehameha rounds out the competition at 351.

Moanalua’s Shawn Lu is tied with Punahou’s Kyle Suppa and Matthew Shen for the individual lead at 72. Na Menehune’s Ray Kim stands alone in second at 73.

Lu and Suppa, Oregon State and USC signees, respectively, both shot 36 in the front and back nines while Shen shot 38-34. Two-time OIA individual champion Kyosuke Hara is tied for seventh with a score of 78.

The second and final round is set to begin on Saturday morning with Kapaa’s Kainalu Gandia, Hawaii Baptist’s Mason Nakamura and Kauai’s Trevor Kua teeing off at 7 a.m.
