The Fort Street Mall Satellite City Hall, which has been closed since Monday because of flooding from Tropical Storm Darby, resumed operations Thursday.
The facility is located under King Street at 1000 Fort Street Mall. Service hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.
Its services include motor vehicle registration, driver license renewal/duplication, property tax payment, water bill payment, fireworks permits, voter registration, disabled parking permits, TheBus pass sales, spay/neuter certificates and licensing for dogs, bicycles and mopeds.
New trail goes near rare bird
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources and the American Bird Conservancy have built the Palila Forest Discovery Trail on the western slope of Mauna Kea, which contains a small area where the palila, an endangered bird, lives.
State and ABC officials opened the mile-long loop through Mauna Kea’s forest Wednesday.
“This new trail will bring folks closer to a remote and often unfamiliar area of Hawaii,” said Jackson Bauer, the trail’s coordinator. “People will be able to see the critically endangered palila and learn about its mamane forest home.”
The American Bird Conservancy and the state Division of Forestry and Wildlife’s Mauna Kea Forest Restoration Project constructed the trail with the support of the Laura Jane Musser Fund Environmental Initiative Program and other community sponsors and volunteers, DLNR said.
Four kiosks provide information with 20 small identification signs and codes along the trail; the codes allow hikers to use their smartphones to learn about the plants and animals in the area, DLNR said.
There are about 2,000 of the palila, a honeycreeper, in the area, DLNR said.
