Holloway stops Pettis to win interim 145-pound UFC title

Max Holloway celebrated after defeating Anthony Pettis, right, to win the interim featherweight title during the main event of a mixed martial arts bout at UFC 206, tonight in Toronto.
Max Holloway stopped Anthony Pettis in the third round to win the UFC interim featherweight title in the main event of UFC 206 tonight at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto.
Holloway (17-3, 13-3 UFC) extended his winning streak to 10 consecutive fights and is expected to challenge Jose Aldo to unify the 145-pound world titles next year.
Pettis (19-6, 6-5) had never been finished in his career before referee Yves Lavigne stopped the bout at 4:50 of the third round.
Pettis, who failed to make the 145-pound weight limit and forfeited 20 percent of his fight purse to Holloway, said he broke his right hand in the first round.
Holloway ended the fight with a flurry of punches and body shots against Pettis, who turtled up against the cage when it ended.
Holloway joins B.J. Penn as the only fighters from Hawaii to win a world championship in the UFC.
