1 injured in gas explosion at Waianae home
A man was injured when a gas leak from the oven he was using caused an explosion in a Waianae residence Monday.
The Honolulu Fire Department said the incident occurred at 87-919 Kulauku St. just before 3 p.m. Neighboring residents were evacuated as a precaution and the gas to the home was shut off.
The victim, in his 20s, reported that he had been cooking when the oven door exploded, HFD said. He was treated for burns and taken to a hospital.
A crew from the Hawaii Gas Co. and HFD hazardous materials personnel tested the air quality before allowing residents to return by 4:04 p.m.
15 stranded hikers rescued on Big Island
A group of 15 hikers had to be airlifted out of Waimanu Valley on Hawaii island after they were stranded due to a rain-swollen stream.
On Sunday, a separate group of five people hiked out of the valley to an area with mobile phone coverage to call 911 for the stranded hikers, according to Hawaii County Fire Department Capt. Peter Andrade. They could not cross Waimanu Stream following heavy rain.
A company of firefighters set up a landing zone near Waipio Valley Lookout, and a rescue chopper was sent to fly out all 15 hikers from the north side of the Waimanu Valley floor, Andrade said. The hikers were uninjured.
The group of five that called 911 later hiked out of the valley at 8:30 p.m.
